Relation of unconscious mind with dreams

Have you ever thought about why do you have this kind or that kind of dreams when you were sleeping?
I bet most of us really have thought about it.
Let me share something about dreams with you~

DREAMS
Dream is defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary as "to have visions and thoughts in your sleep".
Freud (1900) considered dreams to be the royal road to the unconscious mind - McLeod, S. A. (2013). Retrieved from www.simplypsychology.org/Sigmund-Freud.html

Different types of dreams:-
1. Normal dreams
2. Lucid dreams
3. Nightmares

So, in this post, I will only write about the relationship between dreams and unconscious mind.

Unconscious mind comprises mental processes that are inaccessible to consciousness but that influence judgements, feelings, or behaviour (Wilson,2002).
According to Freud (1915), the unconscious mind is the primary source of human behaviour. Like an iceberg, the most important part of the mind is the part you cannot see. Our feelings, motives and decisions are stored in the unconscious and powerfully influenced by our past experiences.
- McLeod, S. A. (2013). Retrieved from www.simplypsychology.org/Sigmund-Freud.html

There are two basic principles of dreams:-
1. Every dream is about the dreamer.
2. Every person, place and thing in the dream is the dreamer.
Why? Because a great majority of us are only aware of a small part of who we are. By learning to interpret your dreams, you can actually know more about yourself. People in your dreams represent aspects of yourself. - www.som.org/1dreams/why.htm

So what's the relation between dreams and the unconscious?
Hmm, most of the content of this post is from the Sigmund Freud's theory by the way.
As he said that the unconscious is the most important part of our behaviour, he proposed that a major function of dreams was the fulfilment of wishes. He distinguished between what the dreamer remembers and the symbolic meaning of the dream. The process whereby the underlying wish is translated into what the dreamer remembers is called dream-work. The purpose of dream-work is to transform the forbidden wish into a non-threatening form, thus reducing anxiety and allowing us to continuing sleeping.

Also, an article of Why We Dream What We Dream written by Michael J Breus Ph.D. stated that people who have nightmares is because of stress, emotional upheaval, and traumatic experiences.
As stated earlier, unconscious is where your feelings, motives, and decisions are actually stored.

In my opinion, the reason why we dream what we dream is just because you are doing something that you really want to do but unable to do it in real life, so your unconscious mind is helping you to make it real by dreaming. Also, based on the article by Michael J Breus Ph.D., that most of the nightmares are from traumatic experiences is because that your unconscious mind is actually know that you have a fear of something or the stress of your emotion is transformed into a symbolic character and the situation in the nightmares.
